This post is specially for the students studying in the fourth semester diploma in mechanical engineering under MSBTE,Mumbai as well as for second year degree in Mechanical Engineering …. fluid mechanics …wonderful subject…actually it very useful subjects but many times students find it little tough for understanding…but its really fantastic subject, the thing s that one must understand its beauty…Beauty..and engineering subjects…again question in mind…lets understand with example…WORK AND HEAT BOTH ARE INEXACT DIFFERENTIAL FUNCTION,PATH FUNCTIONS BUT THEIR DIFFERENCE IS POINT FUNCTION AND EXACT DIFFERENTIAL THAT IS INTERNAL ENERGY and its beauty of first law of thermodynamics..

Well…what about fluid mechanics…yes…its very interesting…lets see…HOW?

Lets see beauty of Fluid Mechanics

1)Reynolds number…Re=(ρVD)/(μ)… its easy to remember Reynolds number..but one can correlate that Reynolds number is directly proportional to velocity ,from velocity one can decide nature of flow.If velocity is high so Reynolds number will be higher and thus flow will be either streamline or turbulent depending on value of Reynolds number.Reynolds number is inversely proportional to kinematic viscosity.Same way it’s inversely proportional to absolute viscosity too…so its fantastic to understand every concept of Reynolds number

2)Density…how many types…Mass density, weight density…and relative density…opps…3 types…but its easy to understand…Mass density ….the ratio of mass per unit volume…weight density..the ratio of weight pr unit volume…and relative density…the density of fluid to the density of standard fluid..as relative density is ratio..it has no unit;whose value need not be necessarily one..it might be 13.6 unlike for mercury.

3)Pressure….If its intensity is same in all direction…its Pascal law…and if we consider the pressure measured by mechanical or any gauge its gauge pressure…while the pressure exerted by atmospheric air on which it comes in contact is atmospheric pressure..When the value is less negative its vacuum pressure…and …what about the PRESSURE AND STRESS …though unit is same but both are not same.

4) Pressure head…velocity head…datum head …has unit of length..that is “meter”.

5)Surface tension and capillarity…can we correlate them…yes…from the equation of capillarity rise.. ..one can say…capillarity rise is directly proportional to surface tension…this helps to understand both the concept..surface tension and capillarity .

6)Energy associated with the fluid in motion…motion means velocity…so its has kinetic energy…fluid is allowed to move from height say water is moving through large pipes..so it has potential energy…and energy due to pressure will be pressure energy, and overall its called total energy…if its same from point one to two…subjected to certain assumptions then its Bernoulli theorem..again it easy…and interesting too.

7)Flow through pipes…the concept of loss of head due to friction…we know that friction makes things irreversible…that is its friction one of the important factor which differentiate between reversible and irreversible process..as the fluid is flowing through the pipes due to friction loss is going to be happen….to quantify it …we have Darcy’s equation…and the the thing coefficient of friction is four times the friction factor one can easily understand and remember Darcy’s equation.

8)Pipes connected in series…easy to understand…PIPES CONNECTED ONE AFTER ANOTHER…LIKE TRAIN WHOSE COACHES ARE CONNECTED ONE AFTER ANOTHER..ITS SERIES PIPE..AND Parallel pipes…are like Double dekkar bus…ONE PLACED OVER ANOTHER…

9)Water hammer…that busting of pipes lines…why it happens…due to back pressure waves created….why back pressure wave created…due to sudden closure of valve…that means..if valves are gradually closed, the water hammer can be reduced or avoided…in this way…the concept of water hammer can be understood forever.

There are such many concepts if we could correlate with actual applications…its very interesting to learn the Engineering….that’s why I always says...DON’T LIKE ENGINEERING..LOVE ENGINEERING..like i do..

Hello Students,
